Product Details

Original Item: Only One Available. Acquired directly from a WW2 veteran's family, this is a great looking M43 Heer (Army) M43 Feldmütze Field Cap. It is constructed of wool with fold-down panels with squared scallops to the front and forward sides, covering the entire neck on the sides and rear when in use. When not in use, the panels are raised with their ends resting upon the visor, being joined together via two aluminum olive-drab painted buttons. The visor is reinforced with cardboard, and covered in matching wool cloth.

Sewn in place in the front of the cap is a standard BeVo style Heer cap trapezoid constructed of machine woven grey and green threading in the shape of a standard eagle over a cockade. It is original to the cap and is machine-sewn to the outer fabric. The BeVo patch is in very clean crisp condition. The interior of the cap is lined with satin and in excellent condition. There are written markings on the inside top of the lining but it can’t be read, sadly.

Overall a wonderful example in excellent condition, comes ready to display!

A patrol hat, also known as a field cap, is a soft kepi with a stiff, rounded visor, and flat top, somewhat similar to a baseball cap, worn by the military personnel of some countries in the field when a combat helmet is not required.

Since before World War I German and Austrian mountain troops had worn a visored "ski cap" (Gebirgsmütze) with turn-down ear flaps secured in front by two buttons. A version of this cap with longer visor, false turn-down, and slightly lower crown in olive cotton twill had been issued with the tropical uniform. In 1943 a similar cap in field-grey wool with a visor intermediate in length between the mountain and tropical versions was issued to all troops for field wear only; it quickly became the most commonly seen soft headgear at the front. Insignia was similar to that of the side-cap, although the eagle and cockade were both worn above the turn-up. A black version was issued to Panzer crewmen.
